Rezūm BPH Therapy in Winnipeg

Rezūm is a gentle and less invasive option for treating an enlarged prostate or a condition called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH), without the need for strong medications or major surgeries.

You can get Rezūm done as an outpatient, which means you won’t have to stay in the hospital or be put to sleep with general or spinal anesthesia. Plus, Rezūm is less likely to cause sexual problems compared to surgery, where many people may experience issues like retrograde ejaculation (<10% with Rezūm vs. >50% with surgery).

Here’s how Rezūm works in simpler terms: It uses a special kind of heat to turn water into vapor, and this vapor is carefully put into the prostate. This vapor helps to fix the blockages in the prostate that can make it hard to pee.

At Men’s Health Clinic Manitoba, we also offer help for other Voiding Dysfunction related problems, like male incontinence in Winnipeg.

Before Your Procedure

Your doctor may stop anticoagulants (blood thinners) a few days to a week prior to your procedure.

Antibiotics may be prescribed (for those with a catheter or at high risk of infection).

You will need to plan to have a ride to and from the office.

Procedure Day

The actual procedure takes only minutes; however, plan on spending approximately two hours for the entire appointment.

You will receive pain medication prescribed by your doctor for the procedure.

We will provide instructions for catheter care.

You will be given a prescription for antibiotics, pain medication and instructions for when to return to have your catheter removed.

Resume Your Life

After your procedure, continue oral antibiotics as prescribed by your doctor.

Your doctor may recommend a catheter for a few days to ease urination during healing.

Avoid activities that may irritate your prostate. Consult your doctor for specific recommendations.

If you experience discomfort:

  • Take a mild pain medication, as recommended by your doctor.

  • Try a warm bath or sitting on a hot water bottle.

  • Consider temporarily removing caffeine, chocolate and alcohol from your diet.

Within a few days, you will most likely be able to resume normal activities, and most patients will experience noticeable symptom improvement in as soon as two weeks. Maximal benefits are typically seen at 3 months.

Dr. Premal Patel is one of the highest volume Rezūm specialists in Canada and was the first to perform Rezūm in Western Canada. Unlike other surgical centres where a number of different specialists perform procedures, Men’s Health Clinic Manitoba was built by Drs. Premal Patel & Jay Nayak for urological procedures.

All the staff at Men’s Health Clinic Manitoba have experience working with and treating patients with urological issues.

There currently does not exist any treatment that will prevent the prostate from growing. Following any treatment of the prostate, some men may have to restart medications or need repeat treatment.

Following Rezūm only 4.4% of patients required surgical retreatment through 5 years.

Rezūm is not covered by Manitoba Health nor any provincial health care plan.
